How do I find the serial number on Mercury outboard motors?
You can very easily find the serial number of a Mercury outboard motor. Usually, you will find a gray plate, roughly the size of a matchbox, on the outside of the motor bracket, on the right side when viewed from the front. There, you will find the serial number of the Mercury outboard motor under "a" and the model number under "b". The serial number is sufficient for searching for spare parts.Â
If the plate is not in that location, check the entire motor bracket to see if it has been glued on elsewhere. On most Mercury outboard motors, you will also find the sticker under the engine cover inside the motor, but not on all of them. If both of these plates are missing, that would be very unusual, and we generally assume that the stickers were deliberately removed. This can happen for several reasons, e.g., engine tampering or tuning, or even theft. We often find that the plate is present but no longer legible; in this case, it has usually been cleaned with a solvent that removed the printing on the plate. Many older Mercury outboard motors still have a round, gray metal plate (roughly the size of a 1-euro coin) pressed into the engine block, on which the serial number of your Mercury outboard motor is stamped.Â
If you still haven't found a serial number, you can also check your documents. Serial numbers are usually recorded in sales contracts, insurance contracts, or registration documents with the authorities.Â
We are happy to try and help you if you cannot find a serial number at all. In that case, it is best to send us pictures of the motor or spare part so that we can assess which motor you have!
