The Mercruiser Shutter Set 807166A3 – also known as a Water Shutter or Water Flapper – is an essential component of the exhaust system of many MerCruiser Sterndrive engines. It prevents water from flowing back into the exhaust system and thus into the engine when the engine is stationary. Without a functioning water shutter, there is a risk of corrosion, hydrostatic lock, or serious engine damage.

During engine operation, the shutter opens flexibly, allowing exhaust gases to escape freely. When the engine is switched off, it closes automatically and blocks the backflow of water. The water shutter is installed within the exhaust system – behind the flexible connection between the exhaust manifold (elbow) and the Y-pipe.

The diameter at the cross pin is 2.5 inches (approx. 6.35 cm). Since this water shutter is used in numerous MerCruiser installations, the service or user manual should always be consulted for exact identification.
