The advantages of a jet
Water is drawn through the intake grate by an impeller, which is driven directly by the drive shaft in the engine. The water is then forced through an exhaust nozzle at high pressure, creating the thrust that propels the boat forward. To reverse, a deflector moves over the exhaust, redirecting the pressure of the jet in the opposite direction. Jet propulsion is forgiving of obstacles that would damage a propeller drive.

Mercury jet drive outboards were specially designed to power boats in shallow waters where propeller-driven boats cannot go. Since there is no component that extends beyond the hull, the jet drive allows you to run over obstacles that would stop a propeller outboard.
