Advantages of a jet
Water is drawn through the intake grate by an impeller, which is driven directly by the drive shaft in the engine. The water is then forced through an exhaust nozzle at high pressure, creating the thrust that propels the boat forward. To go in reverse, a deflector moves across the exhaust, redirecting the pressure of the jet in the opposite direction. Jet propulsion is forgiving of obstacles that would damage a propeller drive.

FourStroke jet outboard
Mercury jet outboards were developed with the premise of mastering every application in shallow water. Our FourStroke jet outboards feature electronic fuel injection. Mercury jet drive outboards were specially designed to power boats in shallow waters where propeller-powered boats cannot go. Since there is no component that extends beyond the hull, jet propulsion allows you to drive over obstacles that would stop a propeller outboard.
